What is the Doppler Effect Calculator?

The Doppler Effect Calculator allows users to determine the frequency of sound heard by an observer when either the source or the observer is moving. By entering the source frequency, the speeds of the observer and source, and the speed of sound, the calculator applies the Doppler effect formula to compute the observed frequency. This helps students, educators, and physics enthusiasts understand the change in frequency due to relative motion, such as the familiar pitch shift of a passing siren.

How to Use:

  1. Enter Source Frequency (fₛ): Input the frequency of the sound emitted by the source in Hertz.
  2. Enter Speeds: Specify the speed of the observer (vₒ) and the source (vₛ). Positive values indicate movement toward each other.
  3. Optional Speed of Sound: Enter the speed of sound in the medium, default is 343 m/s if left blank.
  4. Click “Calculate”: The observed frequency is computed using the Doppler effect formula.
  5. Review the Result: The calculator displays the frequency as perceived by the observer.
